Stone & Flint Walling

Stone and flint walling is a traditional, highly skilled form of masonry found widely across southern and eastern England, especially Kent, Sussex, and East Anglia.

It combines locally gathered flint with stone or brick to create durable, visually distinctive walls.

What Is Stone & Flint Walling

Flint walls rely on careful selection, shaping, and bedding of flints in lime mortar, often combined with stone or brick for strength and aesthetics.

Why It's Used

  • Abundant in chalk regions such as Kent
  • Highly durable and weather‑resistant
  • Distinctive regional character
  • Easy to source locally

Types of Flint Walling

With our 50+ years of experience, there are a range of different techniques which produce different appearances.

  • Field Flint - Unshaped, irregular flints laid randomly for a rustic look
  • Knapped Flint - Split flint to expose the dark inner face for a flat, glossy, finish
  • Flushwork - Knapped flint set with carved stone creating decorative patterns such as chequers
  • Cobbles - Rounded flints from beaches, laid randomly

Lime Mortar

We build flint walls using lime mortar, not cement. This is because lime is breathable which prevents trapped moisture and cracking.

Common Problems We Fix

  • Fixing and replacement of loose or displaced flints
  • Refixing detached flint face from the core
  • Repointing of eroded lime mortar
  • Repairs from inappropriately installed cement repairs
