Lime Pointing
Cantuaria Stonemasons are experienced in lime pointing which is the process of filling and finishing the outer part of masonry joints using breathable lime mortar, essential for the health and longevity of historic brick, stone and flint walls.
What is Lime Pointing?
Lime mortar protects the wall by breathing and by acting as the sacrificial element.
- Allows moisture to evaporate rather than being trapped
- Prevents frost damage and spalling
- Accommodates movement in old buildings
- Preserves the original brick/stone by taking the weathering instead of the masonry
- Maintains the historic appearance and character
How We Go About Our Lime Pointing
- Rake Out Mortar By Hand - First we remove defective or cement mortar to a depth of approx. 25–40mm
- Pre-Wet the Joints - Next we dampen the masonry which is essential for adhesion
- Fill Voids and Build Layers - Some deeper joints may need small stones to reduce mortar volume
- Apply the Lime Mortar - We use small trowels to compact the mortar
- Finish and Texture - Once the mortar has begun to set, we give it a brush to natural finish
